The importance of the Piriformis muscle

The piriformis muscle is a small, pear-shaped muscle located deep within the buttock region. Its primary function is to assist in the rotation of the hip joint, allowing for movements such as turning the leg outward.

The piriformis muscle is also important because the sciatic nerve (which runs from the lower back down the leg) passes through this muscle. Therefore, when the piriformis muscle becomes tight or irritated, it can potentially compress or irritate the sciatic nerve, leading to a condition known as piriformis syndrome, which can cause pain and discomfort in the buttock and down the leg.

Imbalances in this muscle can also lead to a reoccurring sacral torsion (tailbone twisting).

️Common causes to these problems include: bad posture, improper bending or lifting, & hormonal imbalances.

Stretching and manual techniques we use in physical therapy are often used to alleviate symptoms associated with these conditions.
