Did you know TMJ disorder can contribute to neck pain and dizziness?

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) involves several muscles, including the temporalis, masseter, and medial pterygoid muscles. These muscles play a crucial role in jaw movement, such as opening, closing, and side-to-side motions. Dysfunction in these muscles or the TMJ itself can lead to conditions like temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD), causing pain and discomfort in the jaw.

️When this dysfunction occurs, many muscles in the neck start to over compensate leading to chronic neck pain.

️As these neck muscles proceed to compensate and tighten, cervogenic dizziness may occur. Cervogenic dizziness is a type of dizziness or imbalance that originates from issues in the cervical spine (neck). It is believed to be linked to problems with the neck’s proprioceptors, which provide information about body position and movement to the brain. TMJ disorders and other conditions such as cervical osteoarthritis or neck injuries may contribute to cervogenic dizziness.

️At Florida Therapy & Vestibular Rehab we can assess the muscular function in your jaw and neck as well as perform a vertigo screening to address these issues and get you back to feeling stable & pain free!
